I am sure you have seen the adverts on T.V. for an instructor college where you go on a 2 to 3 month course and complete the training and pass 3 exams and hey presto, you're a Qualified Driving Instructor, "What a load of rubbish". It took us 8 months to pass all 3 exams simply because there is so much preparation involved in each one. We were then told by the instructor who trained us that we had taken the shortest time to get through the whole process.

Training to become a driving instructor is not an easy task and it can be very costly if you go to the wrong people, these so called instructor colleges that you see advertised are looking for anything from £3000 upwards to train and put you through the 3 exams and they claim you can do it all in 2 to 3 months. Well if it took us 8 months, there is no way you are going to do it in 3 months.
They also claim to give you a guaranteed placement at a driving school, but what they don't guarantee you is pupils to keep you going. You get a nice new car which is maintained in every way, taxed and insured. And for this they charge you £250 per week.

Lets take the 3 exams,
Part 1 exam
Part 2 exam
Part 3 exam

Part 1 is a theory test similar to the test which Learner Drivers must sit before applying for their driving test, except the part 1 exam is much more difficult. It consists of 100 multiple choice questions on road procedures, car mechanical, disability and law, instructional techniques, etc. After you have completed this section, you must then complete a hazard perception part of the test.
Studying for this exam is done at home with some study material supplied to you.

Part 2 is an advanced driving test. It requires you to drive to a standard like no other motorist on the road today within the confinement of the law. You are also required to perform 4 manoeuvres and you will be examined by a supervising examiner from a driving test center.
Training for this exam is just like taking driving lessons when you were training for you old driving test.

Part 3 is an instructional ability test where you will be tested on you instructional techniques and many other skills required on a part 3 exam by the examiner who will be driving the car.
There are 10 pre-set tests, and of which the examiner will pick 1 at random and test your ability to instruct.
Training for this exam is done on a one-to-one basis with a training instructor in your car normally in a 1 to 2 hour lesson.

So after you have passed parts 1 and 2, you are then legally allowed to teach learner drivers and earn a good living at it too. All you need to do is apply for a Trainee Instructors License.
Having this license and teaching learner drivers gives you good practice for the part 3 exam.

Here's the downside to all of this. If you fail either part 2 or part 3 more than 3 times the examining body does not allow you to reapply for another 2 years, which is essentially 3 strikes and you're out!

Now here's the upside.
What we can offer you is to attend a course with us for 1 week. In the course we will give you detailed insight into all 3 exams and full training. Now you won't be ready to pass any of the exams after 1 week, but the beauty of training to become a driving instructor is that it's mainly home study, and you don't need to pay £3000 to £4000 for a fancy 2 to 3 months course.

Lets look at the 3 exams again.

Part 1 exam, on the course that we run you will spend the first few days in the class room with Pauline and myself. We have every questions on the part 1 exam on file and we have organised them all into exam papers. You can have as many papers as you like and we will go over as many questions as you need.

Part 2 exam, you will get some one-to-one training time with Colin and Pauline in the car.

Part 3 exam, each preset test on the part 3 requires you to deliver a briefing at the start. On our training course we give you copies of the exact briefings required form the examiners, and more importantly we will train you on how to deliver each briefing in the required time.

This course is not just designed to train you on how to pass the exams, there will also be other training involved on simply how to be a driving instructor.
After the course, we will send you home with some part1 exam papers which you can complete in your own time, then send back to us and will mark them and give you comprehensive feedback. This is the only effective way to get ready for the part 1 exam.

Like I said earlier, you will get some one-to-one part 2 and part 3 training which, if you don't live locally, will prepare you well enough to go back home and find yourself a part 2 and part 3 instructor where you can take a one to two hour lesson per week until you are ready, and believe me after attending our course it won't take you long getting ready.
And if you live close to us, then we can finish your practical part 2 and part 3 training and put you through the exams.
